In Fatimid Cairo, honor was woven: state workshops embroidered bands — tiraz — onto robes, naming the wearer's rank in thread. Tiraz carries its bands in glass: crimped ribbons applied by hand while the piece is still soft, then gilded in 24-karat gold and fired. Run a finger across them; the glass remembers the tool.
