On the facade of Al-Aqmar — the mosque our arch comes from — a carved sunburst has thrown light down al-Muizz Street for nine hundred years. The Shamsa bottle blows that medallion into a vessel: a radiating disc of clear glass, cut with rays, holding one small glass eye at its heart. It stands on the vanity the way the shamsa sits on the wall — a sun, at rest. Insured to your door; replaced without question if the journey is unkind.
