Shamsa Rosette Candlestick
the sunburst of Al-Aqmar
Shamsa — the sunburst medallion of the Al-Aqmar facade.
On the facade of the Al-Aqmar mosque — the same wall our arch comes from — a pierced medallion has scattered sunlight down al-Muizz Street since 1125. This candlestick wears them in miniature: rosettes of raised glass dots, hand-placed, each with its center gilded in 24-karat gold, so that by candlelight the piece carries dozens of small suns. Insured to your door; replaced without question if the journey is unkind.
