In the old houses of Cairo, windows were made of colored glass set in carved plaster — qamariyas, 'moon-pieces,' built so that even harsh noon arrived indoors as jewels. Qamariya stacks that window into an object: five hand-blown spheres in the atelier's own colors, joined by fired rings of 24-karat gold where the plaster would be. One sequence, never varied.
