Gold-Net Candlesticks, Set of Three · Mouth-Blown in Cairo

Mashrabiya — the carved wooden screens of old Cairo, built to turn harsh sun into patterned light.* Here the screen is drawn in gold: a hand-worked net of 24-karat gold laid over blown glass, knot by knot, on three candlesticks of three heights. When the tapers are lit, the net throws its pattern across the table — the old city's trick of light, performed in miniature.

The net cannot be made by machine. Each set takes the gilder the better part of a day.
